Not so funky Crochet...!

Well I'm still not sure if I'm inventing stitches or not (haven't gotten around to YouTubing some videos on basic stitches yet) but in my incredibly humble opinion they are looking better than they were a few weeks ago!!!

One day I hope to make an afghan that looks like this:

There is something super cute and homey about a Granny Square afghan - I love them!!  Its the type of thing that I want to snuggle up in on my couch with a big bag of chips and a cold bottle of coke and watch a movie on a cold winters night.  Maybe one day I'll be able to work up to something like that but until then I'll settle for attempting straight lines and trying not to drop stitches!!

I'll toot my my own horn and say that I think that I did ok on my single crochet that I tried the other day:

This however is the unknown stitch that I attempted:

Its not bad, I quite like it but I always seem to manage to twist the yarn when I am turning the square so I don't always end the row the right way.

I think it would actually make a pretty good scrubby dishcloth but I've already torn it out in anticipation for the next time crochet inspiration strikes.  Hopefully I'll peruse YouTube before then so I actually do 'real' stitches that I can learn with and maybe just maybe one day make a real granny square afghan until then its boring 'ol stitches while I learn for me!

  1. I think you are off to an excellent start and we will be seeing that granny square afghan in no time.

  2. I am useless at crochet... But I too love the granny squares look. Have you seen the movie Nanny McPhee? There is a fabulous granny square quilt on one of the kid's beds (along with many awesome quilts).

  3. Thanks Karen and Heather. I hit YouTube last night and was mesmerized by watching a few videos on how to crochet flowers and got a little sidetracked from the Granny Squares.

Heather - Oh my goodness, I love that afghan in Nanny McPhee!! I haven't seen the movie before but I googled 'granny square afghan in Nanny McPhee' and it came up with a still picture from the movie! Thats exactly what I would love to one day make - its beautiful and looks lovely to snuggle up in!

Hopefully I can get the hang of crochet one day and be able to make something similar to that beautiful afghan in Nanny McPhee (if not I may need to etsy it in 10 years if I haven't made one by then!).

  5. Melody - I only wish that I could take credit for the crochet flowers - those are my inspiration!!
My current level of crochet is limited to sort of straight lines and dropped stitches, I'm hoping to one day be able to make something like the top picture!

  6. Kari, keep practicing and you'll be crocheting like a pro in no time. I crocheted long enough to get one afghan made for each of my 3 girls. Then my hands started hurting and I switched to quilting. You can see my afghans on my blog. I believe I posted them back in 2008 or 2009.
